Re: Leaders, readers, writers

Re: Leaders, readers, writers

I refer to Chuks Oluigbo’s article of the above title published in BDSunday of December 7, 2014.

The greatest tragedy of our politics and leadership is that it has been thrust into the hands of a group of people who seem not to know what to do with it. Leadership without vision is rudderless and directionless. I ponder what could have been done with the enormous resources at the hands of some of the people who take the helm and unwittingly seem at a loss at the changes they can make.

Nigerians are very restless. They need a quantum leap from the present state of things to a prosperous future that it is collectively believed we deserve. Unfortunately, the vehicle to take us there does not seem to be defined within the present dispensation.

A depth of study of the needs of the people of Nigeria shows that their needs are simple, but the politics of the day have made them complex. Electricity, good transport systems, security, food in abundance; these are not outside the ambit of the Nigerian politician. But the complex systems he immerses himself in, in order to get to power, often prevent him from understanding the very people who voted for him. Today, we have anomaly like “stomach infrastructure” because of the failure of leaders to install the big picture.

One simple definition of democracy is “give the people what they want”. The people do not want a little money in the pocket given by a politician to get them through the day. They want structures that would enable them get that money themselves. Sadly, these are absent.
