3 things I learned from Seth Godin

3 things I learned from Seth Godin

I had a short public chat with Seth Godin in July 2020, and while he shared so many tips as we discussed, even wrote an ebook out of it, but four other things he did stood out for me and intrigued me, and here, I’ll share them with you.

From the moment I reached out to him, I was consistently watching him and paying attention to his said and unsaid words too many moments after. There are three things he taught me in such a short time:

1. Listening with empathy: Watching Seth answer my questions, you could see how intently he listened. You could almost feel the care. He was listening carefully because it felt as though every question mattered. I watched a series of his other interviews on Youtube, and I noticed it was a pattern. It was as though he knew how much power his words carried, and he had to be sure he answered the question.

2. You don’t have to have all the answers: This was super interesting to notice. I asked Seth a question, and he said: “I don’t know.” I can’t answer this question, but here’s something else that might help. That raw honesty did not in any way diminish his thought-leadership. The transparency deepened trust. It was just an incredible learning point. You don’t have to know it all because the truth is you don’t. Admit when you do not know and point people in the right direction to seek clarity or answers.

3. Respect your time, and people will respect it too: If there was anything else that intrigued me about Seth, it was his respect for his own time. He was very clear about it, and it was contagious. Through him, I saw a physical expression of this quote – if you place a premium on yourself and your time, others will.
