United States President Donald Trump abruptly ended a televised interview with NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ after a tense confrontation with moderator Kristin Welker over his persistent claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged, his proposed compensation fund for alleged victims of government “weaponisation,” and the prosecution of January 6 Capitol riot defendants.

The interview, which aired on Sunday, descended into a series of acrimonious exchanges as Trump repeatedly alleged widespread electoral fraud and political persecution, while Welker challenged him to provide evidence for claims that have been repeatedly rejected by courts and election officials.

The most explosive moment came when Welker questioned Trump’s assertion that the 2020 election had been stolen and asked him to substantiate his allegations.

“The election was rigged. It was a dirty election,” Trump insisted. He claimed that similar practices were continuing in California.

When pressed for evidence, Trump responded, “All I have to do is look. All I have to do is look. And I listen. And I listen to people.” However,  Welker pushed back, saying, “But that’s not evidence.”

The exchange quickly escalated, with Trump accusing Welker and major American media organisations of dishonesty and bias.

“You’re either crooked or you’re stupid. Your press is crooked. And Meet the Press is crooked,” Trump said.

The US President broadened his attack to include ABC, CBS and CNN. As the confrontation intensified, the president abruptly terminated the interview, declaring, “Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough.”

Despite Welker’s appeal for him to continue, Trump walked away, arguing that he had given the network sufficient time and accusing the media of undermining public trust.

The dramatic walkout marked one of Trump’s most contentious television appearances in recent months and underscored his continuing battle with mainstream news organisations over election integrity, media credibility and the treatment of those prosecuted in connection with the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.
