CIPM calls for better collaboration with institutions of higher learning on curriculum development

Nigeria stock market opens 2022 in green

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) recently called for better collaboration and synergy in the design and development of the curriculum of institutions of higher learning in Nigeria at the floor of the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), at the close of trading, recently. It said that the move would strengthen the capacity of graduates in the various institutions of higher learning to be employable and industry-ready.

Udom Inoyo, president/Chairman of Council, CIPM in a statement at the floor of the NSE, said the Federal Government must address the challenges occasioned by skill mismatch in the educational sector. “We need to go back and really understand what the challenges are with the entire spectrum of our educational sector, and why we are turning out graduates that may not be able to compete in today’s world,” he stated.

According to Inoyo, the CIPM is currently working with some universities on curriculum development to see how robust they are and how they can fit-in today’s world. He further opined that it is important for the institutions to collaborate with the industries in tackling the challenge of tertiary institutions producing graduates that are unemployable.

Speaking further on manpower development within the civil service, Inoyo said the mode of recruitment into the civil service is a major impediment to the productivity of the public service in Nigeria.

According to him, the moment a mistake is made at hiring the wrong people in the workplace, the organisation will struggle with its workforce. “Recruiting is a critical part of making sure that we recover from the challenges that we are currently facing in this country. It doesn’t matter whether it is about the political process or core public service, just look at the entire spectrum. I mean it is basically about putting square pegs in round holes. What we want as CIPM is to put square pegs in square holes,” he concludes.
