AELEX was a lead sponsor of the 7th edition of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Africa Conference on International Arbitration, which marked the 100th anniversary of the ICC International Court of Arbitration.
The theme of the Conference which was held on 1 June 2023 and Friday, 2 June 2023 was ‘International Arbitration and ADR: The African Journey So Far and Looking Forward’.
AELEX was well represented at the Conference as Adedapo Tunde-Olowu, SAN, and Perenami Momodu, (Partners), Oluwaseun Philip-Idiok and Agbada S. Agbada (Senior Associates), with Adeyemi Gomes and Rehoboth Juwah (Associates) were in attendance and participated actively at the Conference. Adedapo Tunde-Olowu, SAN was the Co-Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Conference.
The conference week commenced with the ICC Young Arbitrators & ADR Forum (YAAF) Conference which was held on 30 May 2023 at the Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA). Perenami Momodu, also the ICC-YAAF Africa representative, was one of the coordinators of the ICC-YAAF conference with the theme, ‘The Present Future: New Horizons in Arbitration’.

Claudia Salomon, President, the ICC Court of Arbitration, who was also in attendance, spoke about the purpose and objectives of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and encouraged young arbitration practitioners to explore the boundless opportunities in arbitration.
The Conference which also had John Denton, the Secretary-General of the ICC in attendance was graced with a host of Arbitrators both from within and outside Nigeria and other stakeholders from different industries.
Rehoboth Juwah coordinated the session on ‘The Role of Ethics and Competence in Promoting Access to Justice in International Arbitration’ which had Wale Akoni, SAN, Greg Falkof (Partner, Mischon de Raya, United Kingdom), Nagla Nassar (Managing Partner, Nassar Law, Egypt), Patrick Taylor (Partner, Debevoise & Plimpton, United Kingdom), and Daniel Wilmot (Partner, Stewarts, United Kingdom) as panellists. The panellists discussed how selecting arbitrators (aimed to include particular competencies) in arbitrations in African countries can lead to effective representation of parties and the need for an Africa-specific perspective in resolving disputes.
The 7th ICC Africa Conference ended with a closing remark and vote of thanks by Adedapo Tunde-Olowu, SAN.
