Babagana Umara Zulum has confirmed that he personally endorsed his immediate past Commissioner for Works and Housing, Mustapha Gubio, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election, a move that has set early political realignments in motion in Borno State.

Zulum disclosed while speaking on succession planning within his administration, stressing that his decision was guided by competence, loyalty, and continuity in governance. He said Gubio’s performance as Commissioner for Works and Housing informed his confidence in him as a suitable candidate to sustain ongoing development projects in the state.

According to the governor, Gubio demonstrated strong administrative capacity during his tenure, particularly in the delivery of critical infrastructure projects across Borno State. These included road rehabilitation, housing schemes, and reconstruction efforts in communities affected by insurgency. Zulum noted that such experience makes him well-positioned to consolidate on the administration’s gains.

The endorsement has effectively drawn early attention to the 2027 governorship race, even as formal political activities and party primaries remain distant. Analysts say the governor’s position is significant given his influence within the ruling political structure in the state and his central role in post-conflict recovery efforts.

Although Zulum did not indicate that the endorsement represents a final party decision, his statement is expected to shape internal discussions and political calculations within the state’s dominant political party. Political observers argue that such early backing from a sitting governor often carries considerable weight in determining succession outcomes.

Gubio, an engineer by profession, served as one of the key members of Zulum’s cabinet, overseeing one of the most strategic ministries in the state. His tenure was marked by efforts to rebuild infrastructure damaged by years of insurgency in the North-East, with emphasis on restoring access roads, public facilities, and housing projects for displaced communities.

While supporters of the endorsement argue that it promotes continuity and stability, it is expected to generate debate within party circles. Other aspirants may emerge to contest the ticket, potentially setting the stage for internal competition ahead of the primaries.

Zulum, currently serving his second term, has consistently prioritised reconstruction, resettlement of displaced persons, and restoration of basic infrastructure across Borno State. His administration has focused heavily on rebuilding institutions and communities affected by insecurity, positioning development as a central pillar of governance.

The governor’s early endorsement of a preferred successor reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian politics, where outgoing leaders often seek to influence succession outcomes. Though such endorsements are not binding, they frequently shape party dynamics and voter perceptions ahead of elections.

As the 2027 election cycle gradually approaches, political attention in Borno State is expected to intensify around the endorsement and how it influences party unity, candidate emergence, and eventual electoral contests.

For now, Zulum’s declaration has effectively placed Mustapha Gubio at the centre of early succession politics in Borno State, signalling the beginning of a potentially competitive and closely watched political race.
