The urgent need for the advancement in consumer protection and the crucial importance to empowering consumers with the knowledge and resources to make environmentally responsible choices without compromising their basic rights has been brought to the front burner.

Also, barriers often faced by consumers such as limited access to sustainable products, unfair trade practices, and rising costs of living, as well as their solutions have been proffered.

These, among other issues, were discussed during the World Consumer Day 2025 organised by the Lagos State Consumer Protection (LASCOPA).

At the event, themed: ‘A just transition to sustainable lifestyles,’ Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the annual event as a reminder of the vital role consumers play in shaping the economy and the immense responsibility the government bear in ensuring their rights are upheld.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos state government, Bimbola Salu- Hundeyin, commended the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency for its unwavering dedication to safeguarding consumer interests and promoting fair business practices.

On the theme of this year’s celebration, “A just transition to sustainable lifestyles,” the governor affirmed that it resonates deeply with his administration’s vision for a greener and more sustainable Lagos.

According to him, the event emphasises the urgent need to empower consumers with the information and funds to make ecologically responsible choices without conceding their basic rights or quality of life.

He said: “It also reflects a broader call for global action to transition towards sustainability in ways that are just and inclusive.

“As a government, we are committed to driving this transition through policies that encourage sustainable production, efficient waste management, and consumer education.

“Our circular economy initiatives, clean energy programmes, and plastic waste reduction strategies are tangible steps toward a greener Lagos.

“Take for instance, our recent launch of the Lagos climate action plan outlines a comprehensive roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Additionally, the establishment of the Lagos State Carbon Registry will help track and reduce carbon emissions across various sectors.’’

To achieve a just transition, he stressed the need to strengthen consumer protection frameworks, including enforcement mechanisms and penalties for non-compliance, as detailed in the Lagos Consumer Protection Agency Law.

He also called on every Lagos resident to embrace a lifestyle that supports sustainability, adding: “Let us make informed choices, hold businesses accountable, and work together to build a Lagos where prosperity and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.”

He also encouraged local businesses to adopt sustainable practices and ethical marketing strategies, which according to him would not only enhance their reputation but also contribute to a more sustainable Lagos.

On the other hand, Sanwo-Olu urged community leaders and organisations to collaborate with his administration on sustainability projects.

In his words: “We value local voices and perspectives in shaping our policies and initiatives. We are also exploring international best practices and partnerships to enhance our sustainability and consumer protection efforts.

“Take for instance, our collaboration with global environmental organisations has provided valuable insights into effective waste management and renewable energy solutions.”

While reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to bridging the gap between producers and consumers, the Governor pledged to continue to foster mutual understanding and partnerships that drive innovation while addressing market challenges.

Speaking earlier, General Manager, Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, Afolabi Solebo stressed the need for consumers and stakeholders to actively participate in shaping a sustainable future, one that upholds fairness, accessibility, and inclusivity.

According to him, Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has consistently been at the forefront of advocating for consumer rights, ensuring that their policies, programmes, and initiatives align with the evolving needs of consumers while fostering a sustainable and just marketplace.

On his part, Lagos state Commissioner for Commerce Cooperatives, Trades and Investment, Folashade Kaosarat Ambrose described the theme of this year’s celebration as apt adding, “This year’s theme could not have been more timely, as the world faces unprecedented challenges in balancing economic growth, environmental sustainability, and consumer well-being.

“Consumers play a central role in shaping markets, influencing businesses, and driving innovation.

“They often face barriers such as limited access to sustainable products, unfair trade practices, and rising costs of living.

“It is our collective responsibility, as governments, businesses, and civil society, to ensure that the transition to a more sustainable future is just, inclusive, and beneficial to all.’’

She recalled that the past decade has seen the warmest temperatures on record, rising pollution levels, and increasing threats to biodiversity.

These environmental challenges, she said are not just ecological concerns, they directly impact economies, businesses, and consumers.

In addition, she said: “As we seek solutions, we must ensure that sustainable choices are not only available but also accessible and affordable to all, especially vulnerable and low-income consumers.’

To her, a just transition means that consumers’ rights to essential goods and services are protected, adding that every citizen should have access to clean energy, safe food, affordable healthcare, and sustainable housing.

However, the commissioner stressed the need for government to initiate policies that support green innovation and consumer protection and added that policymakers should create regulatory frameworks that encourage responsible business practices while safeguarding consumer rights.

Also, she stated that her organisation’s commitment includes fostering an economic environment that promotes sustainable and responsible consumerism adding,

“We are taking decisive steps to strengthen consumer protection laws and we are working on policies that will ensure fair pricing, product safety, and environmental responsibility in commercial activities.’’
