…Aiyedatiwa asks transporters, residents to shun protest in Ondo

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has declared that the FCT will not be available for protesters on August 1, 2024.

Wike issued this warning during a briefing with journalists following the FCT Security Council meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

He explained that August 1 had been designated for the Chairmen of the six Area Councils of the FCT to present certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers.

“That is the day FCT has set aside for the entire area councils to celebrate and honor their traditional rulers. We will not allow anyone to disrupt this significant day,” Wike stated.

He emphasized the importance of the day’s celebrations, noting that it is an achievement of the current administration. “We want people to come out and celebrate. Therefore, FCT is not available for those who want to protest on that day.”

The Ogun State workers, under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Negotiation Committee (JNC) have dissociated themselves from the planned protest over alleged unremitted pension funds in the State.

The unions, which were represented by Hameed Benco Ademola, the Chairman of NLC; Akeem Lasisi, TUC Chairman and Isa Olude, the Chairman of JNC, noted that the threats through a news broadcast on the proposed industrial action on 1st August by the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR) is not only condemnable but highly uncalled for in all ramifications.

The Union leaders said they have never at any point in time engaged any groups or individuals to agitate over any issue whatsoever on behalf of the groups, saying the organised Labour in Ogun State is not in anyway privy to the said broadcast by CDWR.

According to the groups, there had been robust engagements over time with the Ogun State government, which had resulted to positive outcomes on the part of the government, adding that nothing could have warranted any threat of industrial action by the unions in the State.

The statement reads in part: “Our attention has been drawn to a said news broadcast on N40bn unremitted pension fund by the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR), which is condemnable and uncalled for by the Organized Labour of Ogun State.”
Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Ondo State governor has charged members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and residents of the State against violent protest against President Bola Tinubu’s Administration.

BusinessDay reports that the planned demonstration, inspired by the recent Kenya protests, has gained traction on social media, where it is trending under the hashtags ‘EndBadGovernance,’ ‘TinubuMustGo’ and ‘#Revolution2024.’

Aiyedatiwa, who spoke on Thursday through Bola Taiwo, his Special Adviser on Labour Matters, at a peace meeting in Akure with former chairmen, leaders and members of the NURTW, said peaceful protest is not a bad action, but the latest planned protest is targeted at destroying lives and properties considering the recent Kenyan experience and EndSars protest.
