Why Nigerians must know the mistakes of the past – Ike Nwachukwu

Nwachukwu: Why Presidential system is failing Nigeria

…Peterside says Constitutional change alone can’t change Nigeria

Ike Nwachukwu, a retired General and chairman of the 4th Nigerian Leadership colloquium in honour of Ituah Ighodalo’s 63rd birthday in Victoria Island, Lagos, has said that Nigerians must endeavour to avail themselves of the mistakes in the past, which may have hampered the growth and development of the country.

“The mistake Nigeria made is wide, it is good to know them to survive as a nation,” Nwachukwu said.

Atedo Peterside, the keynote speaker, while delivering his address, pointed out that it would take more than Constitutional review or complete change, but a combination of improvement of system and human elements

He called on politicians to begin to change their ways by showing good examples in society and not to stoke violence.

He traced the crises that led to the coups in 1966, noting that in the aftermath of elections in the Western Region, politicians “failed to check the excesses of their supporters.”

He also sadly noted that such an unfortunate tendency has not been done away with today, as politicians employ violence to win election.
