Why EFCC raided Hajj Commission office in Abuja over N90bn fraud

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday raided the headquarters of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in Abuja over allegations of financial mismanagement involving a N90 billion intervention fund for the 2024 Hajj.

The EFCC stormed the NAHCON office around 11 a.m., detaining the Commission’s spokesperson, Fatimah Usara, alongside three other unidentified staff members.

The operatives reportedly arrived with a valid warrant of arrest, highlighting the gravity of the investigation.

According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the raid was prompted by NAHCON’s failure to provide critical documents requested as part of the ongoing probe.

He disclosed to BusinessDay that the detained officials were held for three hours and later released after claiming that the official responsible for the documents was unavailable, having traveled.

The EFCC’s raid comes after a prior operation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) at the same commission.

The EFCC has yet to provide further details on the next steps in the investigation.
