WAEC releases 2024 WASSCE results, withholds 215,267

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in 2024, withholding 215,267, which represents 11.92 percent of the total 1,805,216 candidates.

According to Amos Dangut, the head of WAEC, Nigeria, the 215,267 results were withheld because of examination malpractice.

The results were made available to candidates on Monday, August 12, as disclosed by the examination body on its official X handle

“The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform candidates who sat WASSCE for school candidates, 2024 that the result has officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024,” the message read.

Out of the 1,805,216 candidates that sat the examination, 73.79 percent achieved credit and/or above in at least five subjects.

The results are available online, and candidates can apply for their digital certificates 48 hours after checking their results.

Dangut had earlier explained that out of 1.8 million students who sat for the examination, 902,328 (49.7 percent) were males and 912,016 females (50.3 percent).

The examination was held in Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

The results for 2024 show a reduction in withheld results compared to 2023, which had a 16.29 percent withholding rate.

Besides, Dangut pointed out that issues such as the use of mobile phones during examinations and organised cheating are under investigation. And that decisions on these cases will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.
