Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma says Nigeria’s democracy risks sliding into imbalance if opposition parties fail to rebuild and provide credible competition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Uzodinma spoke on Saturday during the APC presidential primary, where President Bola Tinubu emerged as the party’s candidate for the 2027 election. The governor stressed that democracy can only thrive in an environment where there is healthy political competition and vibrant opposition parties capable of holding the government accountable.

According to Uzodinma, a weak opposition would undermine democratic principles and reduce the quality of governance, noting that the APC must not become complacent despite its growing political dominance across the country. He said Nigeria’s democratic system depends on the presence of credible alternatives that can challenge the ruling party on policies, ideas, and governance.

The governor explained that strong opposition parties help to deepen democratic culture by promoting accountability, transparency, and issue-based politics. He added that political competition remains essential for national development because it compels leaders to remain responsive to the needs of citizens.

Uzodinma, who is also chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, however expressed confidence in the APC’s chances in the 2027 election, insisting that the party has continued to expand its political influence due to what he described as the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He said the reforms being implemented by the federal government, though difficult, were necessary for the long-term stability of the Nigerian economy. Uzodinma argued that many Nigerians are beginning to appreciate the direction of the administration despite the economic challenges currently facing the country.

The governor also praised party members for remaining united ahead of the next election cycle, urging APC leaders at all levels to continue strengthening the party’s grassroots structures across the federation. He maintained that internal cohesion and effective mobilisation would be critical to the party’s electoral success in 2027.

President Tinubu emerged as the APC’s presidential candidate during the party’s primary election held on Saturday, further consolidating his position as the ruling party’s standard-bearer for the next general election.

Uzodinma’s remarks come amid growing political realignments and increasing conversations around the strength of opposition parties as Nigeria gradually moves toward another election season. Political observers have continued to debate whether opposition parties can rebuild and unite strongly enough to challenge the APC’s dominance in the coming polls.
