US to prosecute pro-Trump ‘criminals’ who stormed Capital – Ambassador

The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard has said the US will prosecute the “criminals” who stormed the US Capitol building on Wednesday in the middle of an ongoing vote to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The invaders who came in solidarity with the ousted President Donald Trump took over the entire building forcing armed forces to be mobilised to quell the invasion.

A woman was reportedly killed during a police gunfight even as hundreds of men and women armed with pro-Trump flags and even explosives that the security personnel neutralised stormed the US Capitol.

The US Ambassador in a statement sent to BusinessDay condemned the invasion.

“Lawlessness and rioting are always unacceptable. The criminals who stormed the U.S. Capitol will be held accountable in accordance with the rule of law in the United States. Our heartfelt gratitude to the many citizens of Nigeria who sent messages of support during Wednesday’s difficult hours. The enduring friendship and partnership between the United States and the people of Nigeria will endure and thrive as we work to perfect our union and our democracy,” Leonard said.

The US Congress has since completed the constitutionally mandated count of the Electoral College and affirmed the election of Joseph R. Biden, and Kamala D. Harris. They will be sworn into office and a peaceful transfer of power will occur on January 20, 2021.
