The expulsion of Goddy-Mbakwe was conveyed in a memo NAU/DIPR/72 dated February 14 signed by Njelita Louis, the acting head of information, public relations and protocol at NAU, with updates on the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings regarding the recent incident involving Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies.

“The actors involved were given a fair hearing by the Students Disciplinary Committee (SDC). After a thorough review by the committee, the act committed by Goddy-Mbakwe Precious, a 300-level student in the Department of History and International Studies was deemed a gross misconduct and violation of Nnamdi Azikiwe University students disciplinary regulations, particularly regulation four (SDC).

“Based on the committee’s findings and recommendations, Joseph Ikechebelu, the acting vice-chancellor on behalf of the university senate, has approved the immediate expulsion of Goddy-Mbakwe Precious from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka,” the statement read in part.

“The university management under the leadership of Joseph Ikechebelu remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the institution by upholding discipline, ensuring a safe and conducive environment for learning and fostering the development of scholars and leaders in character and excellence”, the letter added.

Recall that BusinessDay had earlier reported that the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, had ordered a full-scale, and transparent investigation into the alleged incident involving Goddy-Mbakwe Precious, and Chukwudi Okoye.

The university authorities urged all concerned parties and members of the public to remain calm as they diligently pursue the truth.

“The university is committed to upholding discipline and decorum, and we will ensure that appropriate actions and sanctions are taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

“Nnamdi Azikiwe University remains an institution of learning that upholds moral and ethical standards. There is no place for indiscipline, misconduct or any form of unacceptable behavior within our community,” the management stated.

According to some eyewitness report, “The student was dancing around the corridor while another person was making her video, when the lecturer in an attempt to pass, tapped her on the shoulder and said, ‘excuse me’ as he passed behind her.

However, the dancing female student who seemed not happy with the way the lecturer touched reacted with displeasure; saying, “Can you imagine how he just hit me?”

In face of this, both parties were involved in a physical confrontation, as the girl grabbed and tore the lecturer’s clothes, biting him in the process.
