UNIMAID lecturer murder: Police arrest eight suspects

Man demands N500m damages from Police IG over false ‘wanted’ declaration

The Borno State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with the murder of Abdulkadir Kamal, a lecturer at the Department of Physical and Health Education at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

Kamal’s body was discovered in his office on Sunday evening, according to university spokesperson, Prof. Danjuma Gambo. Details suggest he was working late when the assailants struck.

“Upon receiving a report from the university’s Chief Security Officer at 6:30 am on Monday,” said Daso Kenneth, Police Command spokesperson, “our officers immediately secured the crime scene and transferred the body for autopsy.”

Kenneth confirmed the arrest of eight suspects but emphasized that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and identify all those involved. He urged the university community and the general public to remain calm while the investigation unfolds.

The university, through Gambo, has granted full authority to security agencies, including the police, to conduct a thorough investigation. This includes determining any link between Dr. Kamal’s role as the examination officer and his murder.

A faculty member, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Dr. Kamal was likely targeted while working late to clear his workload during the Easter break. The assailants reportedly used knives and hammers in the attack, leaving the victim deceased and stealing his car and valuables.

While some speculate a connection to his examination officer position, the university awaits a comprehensive report from the police investigation.
