Unidentified expatriate drowns in Alesa River escaping from suspected kidnap attempt

Divers in the water as crowd gathers atop the bridge

An unidentified expatriate has reportedly drowned in River Alesa in Eleme Local Council Area near Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while attempting to escape from kidnappers.

The incident occurred between 8 and 10pm Monday, January 13, 2025.

A crowd has massed along the Alesa Bridge close to Indorama Petrochemicals gate while divers have continued to search for the location of vehicle.

Reports said the expatriate was intercepted at the bridge while returning from work at Onne industrial zone where there are almost 200 companies.

It was gathered that the kidnappers allegedly tried to block the car conveying the expatriate in a convoy but the driver out-maneuvered them but flew into the river.

This caused an uproar and confusion that forced the kidnappers to scamper in other directions. A source said the driver was later rescued but no sign of the expatriate up1pm of Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

BusinessDay however gathered that the vehicle has been sited by the divers from special unit of the police.

Details of the expatriate and the company where he worked have not been made available just as the police and other security agencies have kept mum over the matter.

Several sources within Alesa have confirmed the incident with details while the entire length of the bride has become an attraction and curious zone.
