Udom’s wife raises alarm over scammers promising non-existing jobs

Martha Udom Emmanuel

Wife of Akwa Ibom state governor, Martha Udom Emmanuel has raised the alarm over the promise of non-existing jobs to lure unsuspecting members of the public, describing it as a new strategy by scammers to mislead and deceive the people.

Speaking during a walk for Iniubong Umoren, a lady who went for a fake job interview but kidnaped and killed, the governor’s wife said some of the scammers have gone to the extent of using her name to scam the job seekers.

“Last week, someone called me, Ma did you give my name to somebody? Someone called me to come for an interview; I didn’t even know this is what was trending. I told the guy, I did not and he said thank God I did not go. They called him, they told him that I sent his name to their office for him to come for an interview,’’ she said.

According to her, they have changed their strategy, knowing that so many people are looking for jobs,’’ adding that “let us be mindful of who we follow on the social media platforms, what people advertise on facebook, cross check before you take action,’’ she stated.

The governor’s wife, who promised justice for the slain job seeker, said there would no longer be a hiding place for rapists, kidnapers and cultists in the state.

“No more hiding place for them, I am assuring you again, this boy and all his accomplices will be prosecuted. They will be prosecuted,’’ while advising young people to be mindful of the company they keep and where they visit.

“All others that think they can all do this and go scot free, I want to tell them their time is up. We are not pieces of woods, we have rights of everything, our bodies are not for sale, our bodies are the temple of the Most High.

The killing of Umoren by her kidnapper who had earlier invited her to a job interview in the outskirts of Uyo, the state capital has raised a storm of indignation from various groups including women, students and the human rights community.

According to the police, the suspect, a 20 year-old man, Uduak Frank Akpan has been arrested for the crime and would soon appear in the court after “a discreet investigation.”
