The United States Mission in Nigeria has opened applications for the 2026 cohort of the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme (OFP), offering financial assistance to academically outstanding Nigerian students seeking admission to higher education institutions in the United States.
The programme, administered by EducationUSA Nigeria under the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Mission, aims to support talented students with strong academic records and leadership potential by helping them overcome the financial barriers associated with applying to U.S. universities.
According to a statement by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026.
Interested candidates can apply through the official EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme portal:
According to the mission, the initiative is designed to expand access to U.S. higher education while strengthening educational ties between Nigeria and the United States.
The mission said the programme also supports broader American objectives in leadership development, innovation, and economic cooperation.
The U.S. Mission also said the 2026 cohort aligns with the Freedom250 celebration, which commemorates 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values.
“Freedom250 marks 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values, and the OFP 2026 cohort will advance these priorities by preparing globally competitive talents aligned with U.S. economic and strategic interests,” the statement said.
The mission noted that the programme would place emphasis on preparing students whose academic and professional aspirations align with emerging global priorities, particularly in science and technology-related disciplines.
It added that priority consideration would be given to top-performing students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other critical emerging technologies considered important to U.S. strategic interests.
The U.S. Mission further stressed that the programme is intended to promote responsible and lawful participation in the American higher education system.
“The program reinforces U.S. priorities on secure, lawful, and well-managed student participation of U.S. higher education systems, ensuring participants understand and uphold the proper use of student visas and full compliance with U.S. immigration regulations,” the statement read.
The Opportunity Fund Programme provides financial support for costs that often pose significant challenges to prospective international students.
These include standardised test fees, university application fees, and other essential expenses incurred during the admissions process.
Eligibility requirements for the programme include demonstrated academic excellence, leadership ability, a clear commitment to pursuing post-secondary education in the United States, and evidence of outstanding achievements.
Applicants are also expected to show research capability and a commitment to complying with U.S. visa regulations and programme requirements.
The U.S. Mission further emphasised that successful candidates would be expected to maintain high ethical standards throughout their participation in the programme.
“Participants are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, compliance, and accountability, including adherence to all U.S. visa regulations,” the statement added.
Interested applicants are required to submit a completed application form alongside academic transcripts, a personal statement, evidence of achievements, records of leadership activities, research-related accomplishments, and other supporting documents before the June 30 deadline.
The mission noted that Opportunity Fund Programme has, over the years, helped many talented but financially constrained students gain admission to U.S. colleges and universities by covering key application expenses, thereby increasing access to international educational opportunities for high-achieving Nigerian students.
