A joint security operation comprising the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the police and other paramilitary agencies has neutralised more than 150 bandits following a coordinated attack on communities in Kano State.

The bandits, who stormed villages in Shanono Local Government Area late on Thursday into Friday morning on hundreds of motorcycles, were confronted with heavy firepower from security forces. During the attack, one civilian was reportedly killed, while the assailants made away with cattle.

Confirming the development, Yahya Bagobiri, chairman of the Security Committee covering Faruruwa, Shanono and Bagwai Local Government Areas, said the attackers were pursued from Kano into Kogoro town in neighbouring Katsina State, where they were eliminated.

According to Bagobiri, the operation was jointly led by the Bridge Commander of Bukavo Barracks, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, and the Director of the DSS in Kano. He disclosed that 100 stolen cows were recovered during the operation.

“The security forces chased the bandits into Katsina State and successfully neutralised them, recovering the stolen cows,” Bagobiri said, commending the professionalism and bravery of the troops and security operatives involved.

He added that the successful operation had, in his words, brought an end to persistent bandit encroachment in the affected areas, which had previously been used as a haven and cattle-holding zone by criminal elements.

Bagobiri also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Christopher Musa, the Minister of Defence, for what he described as their firm commitment to restoring peace and security in Kano State and across northern Nigeria.
