FUTA student found dead in own apartment as Police commence investigations to ascertain cause of death.
Police in Ondo State have launched an investigation after a first-year student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) was found dead outside the institution’s campus.
The body of Favour Olaniyi, a student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was discovered near his off-campus residence on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
University mobilises emergency response
Adegbenro Adebanjo, FUTA Corporate Communication and Protocol Director, confirmed the death in a statement released in Akure on Sunday. Adebanjo said the university management immediately informed the police after being alerted to the incident.
University medical officials and security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue while police officers were dispatched to the scene. The university has informed the student’s parents of the development and is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.
FUTA officials are providing counseling support to students affected by the tragedy. The university’s student affairs division has urged students facing challenges to seek guidance through available campus support channels.
Ondo State Police Command Public Relations Officer Abayomi Jimoh said detectives visited the scene where the body was found in a bush along the FUTA North Gate on Friday, 9 May 2026.
Detectives observed no visible marks of violence on the body. However, police recovered a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance at the scene.
The body has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and further examination. Jimoh urged members of the public, particularly young people, to seek professional support during difficult periods.
