According to Global Firepower’s latest report, Egypt, Algeria, and Angola remain the top three African nations in terms of military aircraft fleets. Egypt has increased its fleet by 13 aircraft, Algeria by 3, and Angola by 1.

The report includes various aircraft types, such as fighter jets, bombers, transport planes, and helicopters, across all branches of service. However, aircraft still under development or on order are not considered in the ranking. These fleets contribute to monitoring borders, tackling illegal activities, and ensuring territorial security across the continent.

1. Egypt

Egypt leads Africa with a fleet of 1,093 military aircraft. Ranked 8th globally, Egypt’s significant investment in its air force underscores its strategic position in North Africa. The country has long been a key player in regional and international security operations, utilising its fleet for defence, peacekeeping, and disaster response missions.

2. Algeria

Algeria holds the second spot in Africa, with 608 military aircraft. Ranked 17th globally, Algeria’s air force plays a crucial role in maintaining security across the vast desert terrain of the Sahara. The fleet is a central component of the country’s defence strategy, with advanced aircraft models being used for border surveillance and regional security.

3. Angola

5. South Africa

South Africa’s air force is one of the most advanced on the continent, ranking 5th in Africa with 182 aircraft. Globally, the country stands at 50th.
