Tinubu to receive top honour at Environmental Health Council’s Maiden Awards

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been named Nigeria’s highest promoter of environmental health by the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON).

The recognition will be conferred at the inaugural National Environmental Health Excellence Award (NEHEA), scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at the Banquet Hall, State House, Asokoro, Abuja.

EHCON, the regulatory body overseeing environmental health in the country, stated in a press release that the awards aim to acknowledge the contributions of individuals, public institutions, and private entities to environmental health practice and service delivery in Nigeria.

The event will feature multiple award categories, including the Highest Prestigious Award, National Legislators Award, Ministerial Award, Governors’ Award, Royal Fathers Award, Public Officers Award, Private Sector Award, Corporate Entity Award, Supporting Institutions/Development Partner Award, and Distinguished Environmental Health Practitioner Award.

As part of the ceremony, Tinubu will also unveil the National Environmental Health Practice Regulations (NEHPR) 2025, a framework aimed at strengthening environmental health governance in the country.

Additionally, the president will launch the Premises-based National Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) Emission Monitoring Programme (NGHGEMP), an initiative designed to track emissions at the premises level and support Nigeria’s climate action goals.

In recognition of his contributions to environmental health and governance, Tinubu will be formally invested as Grand Patron of the Society for Environmental Public Health of Nigeria (SEPHON). He will also receive a Fellowship from the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership, USA.

The maiden NEHEA awards mark a significant step in promoting excellence in environmental health, highlighting the role of policymakers, professionals, and stakeholders in advancing sustainable practices across Nigeria.
