President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that there will be no reversal in the implementation of the new Electoral Act, insisting that the law has undergone rigorous legislative scrutiny.
He made the remarks on Friday night at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Abuja.
BusinessDay reports that opposition parties have rejected some aspects of the new law and called for its amendment.
Critics have raised concerns over provisions such as the absence of mandatory real-time transmission of election results, the increase of the presidential campaign spending limit to N10 billion, the removal of indirect primaries, and the exclusion of forged certificates as grounds for election petitions.
But responding, Tinubu maintained that the legislation was carefully considered and is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system.
“The Act is designed to consolidate our democracy, ensure credible elections, and protect the integrity of our nation. It has passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny, and we are not going back,” he said.
Tinubu emphasised that democracy must deliver tangible benefits to all Nigerians and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to national unity and good governance.
The President acknowledged that some government policies may be difficult, but stressed that they were necessary for long-term national stability and development.
“We knew from the outset that some of our policies would be tough, but they are for the future of our children. The foundation we are laying must be strong enough to stand the test of time,” he added.
The President also assured Nigerians that his administration is addressing key challenges, including power supply, promising improvements in the electricity sector.
