President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology. The announcement was made during his 2026 Democracy Day address on June 12.
The President said the decision was taken in recognition of the contributions of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua to Nigeria’s democratic development and national unity. He described the former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, as one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria whose vision of national partnership helped shape the country’s democratic journey.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” Tinubu stated while announcing the approval.
As part of activities marking Democracy Day, the President also paid tribute to pro-democracy activists and announced national honours for several individuals who played significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic struggle. He said the recognitions were aimed at celebrating the courage and sacrifices of those who contributed to the restoration of democratic governance in the country.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to strengthening democratic institutions while working towards national prosperity and development.
The newly renamed General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology is expected to focus on specialised training in geological sciences, petroleum studies and engineering technology. The move is also expected to expand access to specialised tertiary education and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity in the energy and geosciences sectors.
Further details regarding funding, commencement of academic activities and the appointment of the institution’s pioneer management are expected from the Federal Ministry of Education in due course
