Streets go empty in US amid Trump’s immigration crackdown

Across Chicago, communities are retreating into silence as Donald Trump’s immigration policies take hold. Intensified ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids have sown widespread fear, leaving once-bustling streets strangely quiet.

In Little Village, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood on the city’s south side, many residents now remain indoors, afraid of detention.

While officials insist the crackdown targets migrant criminals, concerns persist over “collateral arrests,” where undocumented individuals not initially pursued could also be detained. Even those with legal status are exercising caution.

Steve, a local resident, fears for his mother, who arrived from Mexico years ago without documentation.

“She crossed the border to give us a better life and an education. Now, she’s too scared to step outside,” he told Sky News.

At a community center supporting migrants, security measures have been heightened. The entrance gate stays locked, and staff begin each day by scanning for immigration officers. A notice on the front door informs migrants of their rights if confronted by ICE.

Inside the center, Oliber, a Venezuelan migrant working legally in the U.S. with a valid permit, described how fear has disrupted his daily life.

“I’m constantly on edge,” he said. “I used to work any time and stay out late. Now, I barely leave home.”

“There are rumors about migrants being taken, and I’m terrified. My family depends on me. I can’t afford to take risks,” he added.

The impact of these enforcement actions is undeniable. Immigration officials report a surge in daily deportations compared to the final year of Joe Biden’s presidency.
