Senate sets electoral reforms as top priority in 2025

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday said a key focus in the 2025 legislative year will be the completion of electoral reforms which will involve tinkering with the Electoral Act to usher in a reformed electoral system in preparation for the 2027 election cycle.

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President in his welcome address to Senators following the Yuletide celebrations during plenary, emphasised that the Upper Chamber will prioritise completion of these reforms in 2025 to ensure credible and transparent elections.

“As we return to our legislative duties, we are immediately faced with a matter of utmost importance. A critical task before us is the completion of electoral reforms. We must complete it this year, as the nation begins preparations for the next electoral cycle”, Akpabio said.

“We have a unique opportunity to strengthen our democracy. Electoral reform is not just a legislative duty; it is a moral imperative. It is our chance to gift the Nigerian people a system that is transparent, credible, and reflective of their will. Every vote must count. Let us not waver in this responsibility, for the foundation of every thriving democracy is trust in its electoral processes” , he added.

The Senate President said the consideration of the national budget is also of utmost importance stating that the budget reflects the hope of Nigerians. He charged Senators to ensure that every item within it reflects the collective dreams of citizens and serves as a catalyst for development, equity, and justice.

Akpabio further urged Senators to pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria: “Our country faces numerous challenges, but we must never underestimate the power of collective intercession. Pray for wisdom, peace, and divine intervention to guide our leaders and unite our people” he urged.
