The mayor of London Sadiq Khan has won a third term after the opposition Labour Party swept aside the ruling party in local elections in the UK.

Results have been flooding in as London learns who will be the city’s next mayor and who has been elected to the London Assembly.
Votes have been verified and counting is concluded in both the race for City Hall and for the seats in the assembly.

Sadiq Khan took a commanding lead against his main challenger Susan Hall of the ruling Conservatives.

Khan’s victory means three consecutive losses for three Conservatives in the biggest mayoral prize in the UK.

Labour also won a number of mayoral contests in big cities across the country.
The results will pile more pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who now faces a loss when parliamentary polls are held later this year.
