Rivers govt insists attackers of police be fished out

Rivers’ curfew now statewide over fears of further attacks

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has insisted that those who attacked and killed eight security operatives at checkpoints in the state at the weekend must be fished out. This is coming as the Rivers State police command has also given details of the attacks.

Armed men attacked three different security checkpoints on Owerri Road in Rivers State at the weekend, killing eight operatives.

Wike, in a statement, said there can be no justification for such a heinous and condemnable attack targeted against innocent security personnel on legitimate duty of protecting lives and property in the state.

“The Government of Rivers State is saddened by the unwarranted callous attack on security personnel. We offer our sympathies to the relatives of those who lost their lives in the attack,” Wike said.

“We condemn this heinous act, share the grief of the security agencies and convey our sincere condolences.”

The governor, who charged the security agencies to be vigilant, affirmed that the government and people of Rivers State stand in solidarity with security agencies at these difficult times of unwarranted and mindless violence.

Governor Wike therefore demanded that the perpetrators of the attack be fished out and brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the office of the deputy commissioner of police (operations) sent out a signal that seemed to give details.

“At about 23.30 hours, of 24 April 2021, armed men believed to be IPOB members attacked JTF checkpoint made up of nine policemen and two soldiers along Airport Road at Omagwa, Port Harcourt as well as Customs checkpoint at Isiokpo. Two burnt corpses were recovered at the JTF checkpoint, a rifle each was stolen from the JTF and Customs officers while two Hilux pickup vans with sirens were also carted away from the Customs.

“With these they attempted to attack Isiokpo Area Command but they were repelled. All police officers are on red alert. Efforts are being made to hunt them down.

“Further development shall be communicated,” the police said.
