The House of Representatives has raised alarm over recurring gas explosions after a blast in Apapa, Lagos, injured five people, calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations on gas facility siting.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Hon. Adesola Samuel Adedayo, who drew attention to the early morning explosion on May 5 along Adeleye Street in Apapa Federal Constituency.
Lawmakers said the explosion occurred at a construction site behind two shops, causing extensive damage to nearby structures, significant financial losses, and injuries to five persons, including a student on his way to school.
The House commended the swift response of residents and the Lagos State Fire Service, who evacuated victims to Gbagada General Hospital and other nearby facilities for treatment.
However, members expressed concern over what they described as a pattern of gas explosions, particularly in high-density, low-income areas, warning that weak enforcement of siting regulations continues to put lives and property at risk.
Adopting the motion, the House mandated relevant regulatory bodies to strictly enforce existing rules on the location of gas filling stations and outlets nationwide.
It also directed the National Emergency Management Agency to urgently provide relief materials to victims of the Apapa explosion.
