David Umahi, minister of works, has urged cement manufacturers in Nigeria to slash the price of cement, warning that rising costs are threatening the smooth execution of major infrastructure projects across the country.

Umahi made the appeal at the weekend during the unveiling of the new corporate identity of Lafarge Nigeria, now rebranded as HBM, a member of the HUAXIN Group, in Lagos.

Addressing industry stakeholders, investors, and business leaders, the minister said the federal government would begin consultations with cement producers from July 1 to find a lasting solution to the escalating cost of the commodity.

He expressed concern that contractors handling government projects were increasingly demanding contract reviews due to the high cost of construction materials, particularly cement.

According to him, manufacturers should take responsibility for reducing production costs rather than pushing for contract variations that could place additional financial burdens on the government.

Umahi stressed that the administration of President Tinubu is making unprecedented investments in roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure, creating vast opportunities for cement producers and other industrial players.

He therefore challenged HBM and other manufacturers to expand production capacity to meet the growing demand generated by ongoing and proposed projects nationwide.

The minister congratulated the company on its rebranding and integration into the Huaxin Group, assuring its management of the federal government’s readiness to partner with investors committed to Nigeria’s development.

He noted that the scale of infrastructure projects currently being executed under the Renewed Hope Agenda has significantly expanded the market for construction materials and related services.

Umahi also highlighted the strategic importance of the ongoing , describing it as one of the flagship projects of the Tinubu administration.

According to him, the project has continued to attract international attention because of its engineering quality and long-term economic value.

The minister said the administration remains focused on delivering transformative infrastructure that will boost economic growth, improve connectivity and strengthen national development.

He commended President Tinubu for providing what he described as bold leadership and a clear vision for Nigeria’s infrastructure renewal, expressing confidence that the government’s development agenda would yield lasting benefits for citizens across the country.
