REA, German AI firm partner to scale rural electrification, cut subsidy costs

Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and German artificial intelligence and data analytics company VIDA place GmbH have expanded their partnership to accelerate rural electrification, improve subsidy efficiency and support the country’s drive to achieve universal electricity access by 2030.

In a joint statement signed by Abba Aliyu, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the REA, and Tobias Engelmeier, Chief Executive Officer of VIDAplace GmbH, the renewed collaboration was formalised with the signing of an extension and expansion agreement between the two organisations during the visit of Johann Wadephul, Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The agreement forms part of the broader Nigerian-German partnership aimed at advancing sustainable energy access, strengthening institutions and leveraging digital innovation to support Nigeria’s clean energy transition under the National Energy Compact and the Mission 300 initiative.

Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to harnessing data and artificial intelligence to expand electricity access across underserved communities.

“Through the Nigerian–German Energy Partnership, the collaboration has evolved from policy dialogue into practical cooperation spanning renewable energy market development, digital innovation, technical capacity building, and private sector mobilisation.

“Nigeria’s data-driven approach is becoming a reference for the continent. REA is already sharing its experience with partner governments across Africa, and the REA–VIDA platform serves as a use case for other African countries pursuing universal energy access under Mission 300,” the statement read

The statement noted that Germany has remained one of Nigeria’s most reliable energy sector partners for nearly two decades through the Nigerian-German Energy Partnership, which has evolved from policy engagement to practical collaboration in renewable energy development, digital innovation, technical capacity building and private sector mobilisation.

According to the statement, the REA has become the Federal Government’s primary platform for delivering large-scale decentralised electrification programmes across the country.

It said the agency, through flagship initiatives including the Nigeria Electrification Programme (NEP), the $750 million World Bank-financed Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) Programme, the Energising Education Programme and the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, has provided electricity access to about 4.5 million Nigerians.

The statement described the achievement as one of the fastest rural electrification efforts globally.

It added that VIDA’s AI-powered analytics and geospatial platform has become a critical component of the DARES Programme by supporting electrification planning and subsidy allocation.

According to the partners, the platform has enabled the REA and the World Bank to save more than $100 million in public funds through improved subsidy targeting while extending electrification to harder-to-reach communities.

The statement further disclosed that about 200 private sector companies currently use VIDA’s market intelligence platform to identify investment opportunities, helping to accelerate private sector participation in expanding electricity access.

It noted that Nigeria’s data-driven approach to rural electrification is increasingly serving as a model for other African countries pursuing universal electricity access under the Mission 300 initiative, with the REA already sharing its experience with several partner governments across the continent.

The renewed agreement, the statement added, reflects the shared commitment of Nigeria and Germany to deepen the use of digital technologies, data and artificial intelligence in expanding energy access, improving public sector efficiency and supporting sustainable economic development.

Nigeria aims to achieve universal electricity access by 2030 through its National Energy Compact under the Mission 300 initiative, which seeks to connect 300 million people across Africa to electricity by the end of the decade.
