The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised alarms over potential violence and serious security threats if the planned Local Government elections in Osun State proceed as scheduled.

In a statement issued by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the NPF revealed that credible intelligence indicates a high likelihood of unrest, with various groups, including political actors and other interest parties, allegedly mobilizing to disrupt the elections, threaten public peace, and undermine democratic processes.

“Given this imminent threat to security, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of public safety and national stability,” the statement read.

The Police Force stressed that moving forward with the elections under the current volatile conditions could escalate tensions, leading to widespread violence, loss of lives, and damage to property.

While assuring the public of their readiness, in collaboration with other security agencies, to prevent any breakdown of law and order, the NPF urged authorities to avert unnecessary confrontations by postponing the polls.

Beyond security concerns, the NPF also highlighted legal complications surrounding the elections.

Referring to a recent Court of Appeal ruling on February 10, 2025, which overturned an earlier Federal High Court decision regarding Local Government administration in Osun, the Police emphasized that the planned elections currently lack a solid legal foundation.

“In light of the heightened security risks and unresolved legal questions, we strongly advise the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the elections immediately,” the Police stated.

The Force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the democratic process in Nigeria.

It also called on political parties and stakeholders to exercise restraint and prioritize the safety and well-being of citizens during this critical period.
