Police operatives in Kano State have repelled an armed attack while attempting to arrest a suspected bandit leader in Bichi Local Government Area, leaving one suspect dead.
The operation, carried out by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force under the Kano State Police Command, was aimed at apprehending a wanted criminal figure believed to be linked to banditry and other violent crimes in parts of the State.
According to security sources, the Police team encountered resistance during the operation as armed associates of the suspect reportedly opened fire in a bid to prevent his arrest. The officers responded, repelling the attack in a gun battle that resulted in the death of one of the suspects.
Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Spokesperson, Kano Police Command, confided that the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and curb banditry-related activities around Bichi Local Government Area in Kano.
The Police have, however, intensified surveillance and intelligence-led operations in the area following concerns over the activities of armed groups operating on the fringes of rural communities.
Kano State, historically regarded as one of the most secure States in Morthern Nigeria, has in recent years recorded isolated incidents linked to banditry and kidnapping spilling over from neighbouring States.
Security agencies have since stepped up coordinated operations to prevent criminal elements from establishing footholds within the State.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the group involved in the attack, assuring residents that security operations will continue until those responsible for criminal activities in the area are brought to justice.
Residents have also been urged to support security agencies with credible information that could aid ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security across the State.
