The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has said that it recovered a total of 1,519 stolen vehicles in 2024 using the Central Motor Registry Portal (e-CMR), a digital system designed to track and identify stolen vehicles across the country.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja highlighting the success of the e-CMR in combating vehicle-related crimes.
He further revealed that 52 stolen vehicles have already been recovered in January 2025, with several other cases currently under investigation.
“The efforts of the Force in combating crime in various spheres cannot be overemphasized, specifically in the area of vehicle theft. This success was made possible due to the cooperation of the public using the e-CMR portal”, Adejobi stated.
The Force noted that the electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) is a digital repository of licensed motor vehicles in Nigeria.
“It enables vehicle owners to register their car details and report theft instantly, aiding law enforcement in swift tracking and recovery.
“Since its activation, the electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) portal has significantly improved the tracking and recovery of stolen vehicles in Nigeria.
” So far, over 400,000 vehicles have been registered in the database, enabling law enforcement to monitor and verify vehicle ownership more effectively”, it added.

“More recently, in another operation, two vehicles were recovered in Kano State. Meanwhile, 5,877 vehicles with conflicting details are currently under investigation, as authorities work to resolve discrepancies and identify potential cases of vehicle theft.
he Nigeria Police Force said that it is developing a USSD-based verification system that will allow Nigerians to check a vehicle’s status using their mobile phones. This feature will be deployed as soon as the integration process with telecom operators is completed.
“To register your vehicle with the Nigeria Police, visit https://cmris.npf.gov.ng. To report a stolen vehicle, visit https://reportcmr.npf.gov.ng”, it said.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) reaffirms it’s commitment to strengthen its e-policing initiatives through the Police Rescue Me App, a safety application designed for emergencies, and the Police VGS Emergency App, which provides a real-time emergency response system.
“The reactivation of the e-CMR portal has enhanced vehicle crime prevention across the country.
“Our focus remains on using every available tool to ensure the safety of our citizens and protect their properties”, it assured.
