Police quell fresh Plateau communal clash, heighten security in hotspots

The Plateau State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner, Steve Yabanet, swiftly intervened in a clash between Ponlong Village of Mikang LGA and Fungyallang Village of Langtang North LGA.

Prompted by an informant’s report, law enforcement authorities led by the DPO Mikang Division rushed to the scene to stabilize the situation, following a clash sparked by a land dispute between the two communities.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer Plateau state command, Afred Alabo said Initial findings revealed the destruction of five houses and the injury of one Ishaku Wumtel, who was promptly transported to the general hospital for medical attention.

According to him, responding decisively, the CP ordered the reinforcement of security deployments, directing additional personnel from various units including Area Command Langtang, 66PMF Shendam, and Shendam Division. Tactical teams from the State headquarters were also dispatched to thwart further incidents and maintain order in the area.

He asserted that in a proactive measure to address the root causes of the conflict, the Commissioner scheduled a meeting with stakeholders from both communities and representatives of the affected LGAs.

Emphasizing the importance of dialogue over violence, the statement urged all residents to embrace peaceful dispute-resolution methods.

“The Plateau State Police Command received information at the Mikang Division from an informant, reporting a clash between the people of Ponlong Village of Mikang LGA and Fungyallang village of Langtang North LGA.

“On receipt of the report, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Steve Yabanet, ordered the immediate deployment of Policemen to be led by the DPO Mikang Division who immediately raced to the scene to stabilise the situation.

“Upon preliminary investigation, we discovered that the clash erupted as a result of a land dispute between the two communities. In the course of the clash, about Five (5) houses were set ablaze, while other livestock were destroyed. One Ishaku Wumtel also sustained a bullet wound and was immediately rushed to the General Hospital for treatment.

“The proactive commissioner has ordered intensified patrol of the area and the immediate deployment of additional personnel from Area Command Langtang, 66PMF Shendam, Shendam Division and a detachment of Tactical Teams from the State headquarters to prevent any further occurrences of such incidence and sustain normalcy in the area. He has also ordered the relocation of the Area Commander Langtang and Commander 66PMF to the troubled Areas.”; Part of the statement read.

BusinessDay reported that Several people had been reportedly killed in a conflict in the Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident, involving Taroh and Motola youths, began on Saturday night and continued until Sunday morning.

Musa Ashoms, the state commissioner for information, acknowledged the incident, attributing it to a land dispute.

He mentioned a conversation with the Mikang Local Government chairman, who expressed that the crisis was preventable and regrettable due to the loss of life and injuries.
