For families who lost loved ones serving in the police and for officers struggling with injuries sustained in the line of duty, financial hardship often becomes an added burden after tragedy strikes. In a move aimed at easing such challenges, the Kano State Police Command has disbursed N3.18 million in insurance benefits to families of deceased officers and an injured personnel.

The cheques were presented on Thursday by the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to five next of kin of officers who died while serving the nation, as well as one officer who sustained injuries during duty operations.

The payment was made under the Group Personnel Accident Insurance Scheme, a welfare programme designed to provide financial relief to police officers and their families when accidents, injuries or death occur in the course of service.
For many of the beneficiaries, the support represents more than just money. It is a lifeline at a time when families often struggle to cope with the sudden loss of a breadwinner or the medical expenses that follow serious injuries.

Police authorities noted that the initiative reflects the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to strengthen welfare programmes for officers and ensure that families left behind are not abandoned.

Presenting the cheques, Bakori conveyed the Inspector-General’s message of solidarity to the beneficiaries, assuring them that the Nigeria Police Force recognises the sacrifices made by officers who risk their lives daily to protect citizens.
He urged the recipients to use the funds wisely to support their families and address pressing needs such as healthcare, education and household responsibilities.

According to the commissioner, the gesture is part of ongoing efforts by the police leadership to prioritise the welfare of personnel and to ensure that officers remain motivated despite the dangers associated with the profession.

He also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of officers who died while serving the country, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice they made in the line of duty.

“Our officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. When tragedy occurs, it is our responsibility to stand by the families they left behind,” Bakori said.

For some of the beneficiaries, the moment was emotional. A few described the payment as a timely intervention that would help them cope with the financial difficulties that followed the loss of their loved ones.

One of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the police leadership, saying the gesture reassured families that the sacrifices of fallen officers have not been forgotten.

“This support will go a long way in helping us take care of the family needs that our late relative used to shoulder,” the beneficiary said.

Police authorities say the insurance scheme is part of broader reforms aimed at improving welfare packages for personnel across the country.

The Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and effective service delivery, while also stressing that the welfare of officers and their families remains a key priority for the leadership of the force
