The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into alleged security threats circulating on social media, which sparked fear and disrupted activities in several schools across the state.

The human resources officers of some schools within Ikeja axis of Lagos State reported to the police headquarters about the received threats from unidentified numbers earlier in the week.

Ololundare Jimoh, the commissioner of police in the state swiftly mobilised his men including a team of experts from the command’s explosive ordnance disposal, chemical biological radiological and nuclear, the rapid response and other tactical teams to the schools premises for on-the-spot assessment and security.

BusinessDay had reported the early closure of schools in Lagos on Thursday which was prompted by this development. As a result of this threat, the police took a painstaking and total sweep of the environment of the schools where the threat report came from, including classrooms, administrative offices, halls, playgrounds and surroundings conducted by EOD-CBRN experts to guide against improvised explosive devices or any other dangerous materials.

However, the operation found no expolsive devices and the schools were declared safe for academic and administrative activities.

The police commissioner nevertheless directed that the investigation be intensified to trace, identify, and apprehend those behind the disturbing social media message with a view to bringing them to justice in accordance with the law.

Besides, the Lagos police command deployed strategically a combined team of personnel on a permanent basis to ensure round-the-clock safety of school children, teachers, administrators and facilities.

Meanwhile, the police has assured parents, guardians, school authorities, and the general public that the command remains proactive, responsive and fully committed to maintaining peace, safety, and public order in Lagos State.

However, the police command enjoined Lagos residents to remain calm, vigilant and continued with their lawful activities, and should not hesitate to report any suspicious activity or security concern to the nearest police station.
