The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed rumours circulating online about a purported hack of the Enugu State Government’s official account, allegedly leading to the theft of N1.09 billion.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the NPF described the claims as “completely unfounded” and clarified that there was no hacking incident or cyber breach of the state government’s account.
According to the statement, the case in question was a procurement fraud, not a cyber-related crime.
It noted that investigation, led by the NPF’s National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC), resulted in the arrest of a suspect connected to the fraud, and the stolen funds have already been recovered.
NPF further noted that the Enugu State Government, alongside other ministries, departments, agencies, and corporate organizations, has implemented fortified security measures in collaboration with the NCCC to protect their financial systems.
The NPF urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and emphasized the importance of verifying news sources before sharing information.
“Citizens are encouraged to refrain from engaging in misinformation and to always verify the credibility of news sources,” the statement read.
The police reassured the public of their commitment to transparency and security while warning against false narratives that could undermine trust in government institutions.
