Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has urged Nigerians to unite with him under what he described as “Operation Rescue Nigeria” ahead of the 2027 polls.
Speaking in Uyo at the OBIDIENT Conference and declaration for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi said the mission is about securing the country’s future, not personal ambition.
“Operation Rescue Nigeria is not about me; it is about our collective future and the generations that will suffer the consequences of bad governance,” he said.
He called on Nigerians to set aside differences and work together to rebuild the country through democratic means.
Obi insists on electronic transmission of results
Obi stressed that Nigeria must ensure credible elections in 2027, particularly through real-time electronic transmission of results.
“Nigeria must get it right in 2027. Election results must be transmitted online in real time,” he said.
He added that transparency in the electoral process remains essential to restoring confidence in democracy.
Why he left Labour Party
Obi said he left the Labour Party after receiving information that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would not recognise the party’s leadership while he remained a member.
“I left the Labour Party when I got informed that as long as I remain, INEC will not recognise its leadership,” he said.
He confirmed his intention to contest the next presidential election, saying he remains committed to offering leadership.
Obi Criticises rising debt, promises reforms
Obi criticised the current administration over rising public debt, warning that future generations will bear the burden.
“The current administration has collected more loans than every other administration, and most of these loans will be repaid between 2045 and 2050,” he said.
He pledged to prioritise investment in education and healthcare, reduce poverty, and address insecurity if elected.
Supporters mobilise under ADC platform
Tanko Yunusa, global coordinator of the OBIDIENT movement, urged supporters to mobilise nationwide and strengthen grassroots structures ahead of 2027.
He said the movement would align with the ADC as its political platform and intensify voter mobilisation.
“This election is not about an individual but about the future of Nigeria,” Yunusa said.
Obi’s supporters said they have begun early mobilisation to build momentum for the next presidential election.
