The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Akwa Ibom State chapter has suspended the Local Government elections campaign tour till further notice.
Borono Bassey, publicity secretary of the party said in a statement that the decision was based on “the mood of the nation” which observers say might not be unconnected with the killing of unarmed protesters by soldiers in Lagos on Tuesday.
The local government election is scheduled to hold next weekend but the All Progressives Congress (APC) is boycotting saying it has no confidence in the electoral umpire.
“As a people-oriented and responsive party, we are deeply distraught by the sad mood which our nation, Nigeria, has been forcefully thrown into by yesterday’s massacre of armless Nigerian youths at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos State,” he said.
According to him, their only agitation was to demand an end to Police brutality and other associated vices, but they have regrettably reaped more brutality in the hands of those who are saddled with the responsibility of protecting them.
While it condemns ” in strong terms the gruesome murder of those young people by agents of darkness masquerading as institutions of government,” it expresses
condoles with the families of those who lost their lives during the massacre and pray for the quick recovery of those wounded and are currently receiving medical care in various facilities.
It urged “all members of our party and supporters to remain calm in this extremely challenging moment in our country as we are confident that God Almighty will lead our nation past this turbulent period.”
