Payment of ransoms sustains kidnapping industry, says Shehu Sani

Former lawmaker and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, described the release of the kidnapped Kankara students as a welcome and commendable development.

Former lawmaker and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has said the payment of a ransom to secure the release of victims is sustaining and flourishing the kidnapping industry in Nigeria.

Sani, however, also said non-payment of ransom puts the lives of the victims in grave danger.

“We are stuck in between the flame of evil and the sword of infamy,” he said in a tweet via his verified handle.

Sani described the release of the kidnapped Kankara students as a welcome and commendable development.

Recall that students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State, were kidnapped by Boko Haram on December 11, 2020.

The Katsina State government, however, announced late Thursday the release of the kidnapped students, saying that no ransom was paid to secure the boys’ freedom.
