Police operatives attached to the Karshi divisional headquarters in the Karu local government area of Nasarawa State have arrested Asonye Isaiah, 37, of the Rock of Love and Adoration Ground. The arrest follows the alleged defilement of a 16-year-old girl in the state.

SP Ramhan Nansel, Nasarawa State Command spokesperson stated that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect deceived the victim’s aunt by claiming the niece was “possessed” and required a cleansing ritual at a river. Instead, the suspect allegedly took the victim to a hotel in New Karshi, where he assaulted her twice and threatened her life to ensure her silence.

The matter came to light after the victim’s guardian noticed unusual changes in her behaviour and questioned her. A subsequent medical examination confirmed the assault. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the offence and pleaded for leniency.

Police Commissioner CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for a comprehensive investigation and subsequent prosecution.

Mohammed assured the public that justice would be served. He further urged citizens to exercise caution regarding the places of worship they attend and the individuals who present themselves as clerics.
