Bolaji Akinola, special adviser on Media and Communications to the minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has criticised music star, David Adeleke, otherwise known as Davido, over recent social media posts targeting the former Osun State governor.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Akinola accused the singer of disrespect and political partisanship following comments he made on X against the minister.

Davido had posted: “The most desperate politician in the world is @GboyegaOyetola very embarrassing.”
In another post, he wrote: “OYETOLA UR PLAN NO GO WORK.”

Reacting, Akinola said the singer’s comments were inappropriate and inconsistent with Yoruba cultural values.

“While every Nigerian has the right to political opinion and free expression, it is disgraceful that a public figure of Davido’s stature would resort to crude insults and juvenile theatrics against a statesman old enough to be his father,” he said.

“In Yoruba culture, respect for elders is not optional; it is a fundamental value. Well-brought-up Yoruba sons do not insult their elders on social media because of partisan excitement or family political interests.”

The minister’s aide said freedom of expression should not be used to justify personal attacks.

“Davido’s freedom of speech is not a license for inherited arrogance,” Akinola said, adding that insulting an elder “doesn’t make him look tough — it just proves he lacks the character and decorum expected of someone with his platform.”

Akinola also defended Oyetola’s public service record, saying the minister’s performance as former governor of Osun State and current minister did not require validation from celebrities.

“Unlike those addicted to social media drama and attention-seeking outbursts, His Excellency Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola’s record of service, performance and integrity speaks loudly for him,” he said.

“He does not need validation from celebrity noise-makers or political entertainers seeking relevance through insults.”

The minister’s aide linked the exchanges to the political climate ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State, where Governor Ademola Adeleke is expected to seek re-election.

He said, “Resorting to cheap insults is the last refuge of a panicked campaign,” adding that “the people of Osun State are tired of emotional outbursts and celebrity side-shows, and are demanding actual governance.”

Akinola further stated that “no amount of lies, propaganda or online hostility can distract the public from the grim reality of the last three and a half years.”
