The Ondo State Police Command says it has begun investigation on the death of Ayandare Modupe, a student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), in the state.
Modupe, popularly known as Comrade Modesty, until her death was a 500-level student of Agronomy department, Faculty of Agriculture, in the institution.
“This 500L student of AAUA was found dead this morning in Akungba; she was said to have left a vigil around 4 am. The circumstances surrounding her death look very suspicious; video and eyewitness accounts show that she did not commit suicide as presumed. I am calling on the @OndopoliceNG to critically investigate this matter, as this looks more like a case of murder,” Oluyemi Fasipe, a youth advocate on X said in a video he posted.
Confirming the incident, the state police on its X handle tweeted, “the case has been reported at Akungba Division and the command is working on it.”
Funmilayo Odunlami, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, said the report the police has was that she committed suicide.
“Of course, some people may have a different opinion, an investigation is currently ongoing on it,” she said while speaking with our correspondent Monday evening.
Social media users and colleagues have also called on the police to be proactive and get to the root of the matter.
Adesola Ikulajolu, a graduate of the institution, described the deceased as a young, vibrant and very outspoken lady.
“I personally recruited her into the AAUA Debate Society in 2021- when I founded it before graduating.
“So sad to hear of her demise this morning.
“She practically comes for meetings then on Sundays even on her church outfit,” he said.
Another graduate, Udofia Shalom, described the incident as very sad, saying, “I handed over the affair of the Faculty vice-president into her hands as my successor in 2021, She did not deserve this kind of treatment at all.”
Among others who commiserated with family of the late student and prayed her soul rest in peace is Solahudeen, a colleague, who called for justice.
“I represented my faculty in a debate organised by the faculty of agriculture last session, I was the second runner up, she presented me a certificate of participation, then handed me a sweet delicacy. You are not alone modupe, may your soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
Anike Akoriola said, until Modupe’s death, she was a passionate volunteer, seasoned humanitarian and the President Rotaract Club of AAUA.
“This is so sad as Rotaract D9125 mourn💔. May all the perpetrators be brought to book. Rest in peace dear partner,” she said.
