Oil production: Fubara leads leads Ogoni leaders to meet Tinubu

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, on Wednesday, led leaders of the Ogoni land to meet with President Bola Tinubu behind closed doors at the presidential Villa, Abuja

BusinessDay gathered that the meeting is in appreciation of the lifting of the State of Emergency imposed on Rivers and the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland

The President had last week lifted the emergency rule, followed by a recent visit to the President by Governor Fubara

Recall also that following resumption of oil production in the area, production had increased about 1.8 million barrels per day this year

This is just as all pipelines in the region are now operational for the first time in several years.

The President also recently approved a University of Technology for the area

Ogoniland’s oil history dates back to the late 1950s, with exploration and production

Although details of the meeting remain scanty, but the region is still faced with environmental challenges as oil clean up still remains a concern.

In 2011 however , United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reported severe pollution, resulting from massive oil spills that contaminated water, soil, and air, with benzene levels exceeding safe limits. The report estimated a 30-year remediation restoration timeline
