Nothing new in Obasa’s invitation by EFCC – Aide

Lagos Assembly approves reordering of 2024 budget

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa

An aide to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has said that there was nothing new in the speaker’s invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Reports emanated Thursday that Obasa, who is a two-time speaker of the Lagos Assembly, was in EFCC custody responding to questions on allegations of fraud.

However, reacting in a telephone interview with BusinessDay, an aide to the speaker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as he was not permitted to speak on the issue, said since Obasa was occupying public office, such an invitation was bound to happen at any given time.

“I am not surprised by the EFCC invitation, there is nothing new, he is occupying public office and anybody of such would be in public scrutiny,” he said.

Recall that in recent times there have been agitations for the commission to investigate the Speaker over corruption allegations levelled against him.

The speaker had some months back appeared before the House panel of enquiry on the corruption allegations; the committee, however, exonerated him of any wrongdoing and even asked anyone with evidence to come forward.

Obasa has consistently denied most of the allegations, but he admitted that N80 million as estacode was approved for the training of the wives of 20 lawmakers in Dubai.

“We gave N4m to each of the participants for air tickets, hotels, feedings and local travel. Air ticket to Dubai alone costs about N2m,” Obasa had said.
