The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Benue State has urged residents to remain vigilant against Ebola Virus Disease, saying Nigeria is on high alert despite having no confirmed cases.
In a statement signed by Aja DIA, Assistant Director Health and Social Care, for Mark Dewua, NOA State Director, said the advisory was issued on 25 May 2026 to prepare the public following heightened global risk and the potential for cross-border transmission through international travel.
“The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention had already placed the country on precautionary alert.
“Ebola is a severe and often fatal illness spread through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person or animal”, Dewua said.
He listed symptoms to watch out for as sudden fever, weakness, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, and unexplained bleeding, and advised anyone with these signs to seek immediate medical care.
The Agency outlined key prevention measures to include regular handwashing with soap, avoiding contact with sick persons, not handling bushmeat or the bodies of dead animals, and reporting suspected cases to the nearest health facility.
It also warned against spreading unverified information.
Dewua called on healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion, use personal protective equipment, and follow infection prevention protocols.
He reassured residents that NOA is working with Health Authorities to keep Benue safe, urging calm and cooperation.
“Together, through vigilance, responsible behaviour, and timely action, we can prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease,” he added.
