The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has called on Nigerian workers to translate their resilience in the face of economic hardship into strategic political action as the country marked the International Workers’ Day.

In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, the party, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bamofin Ladipo Johnson, commended workers for their perseverance despite what it described as worsening socio-economic conditions.

The NNPP noted that Nigerian workers are grappling with rising inflation, increased transportation and energy costs, and a growing disparity between wages and the cost of living.

It stressed that while workers have remained productive under pressure, resilience alone should not replace the need for economic prosperity.

“This May Day calls for deep reflection. Nigerian workers are facing unprecedented hardship, yet they continue to keep the nation running. However, resilience should not be a substitute for prosperity,” the statement said.

The party used the occasion to urge workers across sectors to become more politically conscious and organised, particularly as the country approaches another electoral cycle.

According to the NNPP, workers possess significant electoral influence that can be used to shape governance and demand better policies.

It called for the emergence of leaders who will prioritise improved wages, implement policies to reduce the cost of living, and invest in infrastructure and social safety nets that directly benefit ordinary citizens.

Reaffirming its commitment to workers’ welfare, the NNPP said it remains dedicated to advocating for a system where the dignity of labour is matched with improved living standards.

Johnson emphasised that the power of the ballot remains a critical tool for change, urging workers to support leaders who are responsive to their needs.

Nigeria joins the rest of the world each year on May 1 to celebrate workers and highlight labour-related issues, with calls for improved welfare and economic reforms dominating this year’s commemoration.
