NNPCL unveils five LNG mini-plants to boost gas supply in Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has taken a step toward enhancing energy access with the launch of five Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) mini-plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

The newly commissioned facilities—PRIME LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete—will source natural gas from existing pipelines in the region, with their primary feedstock set to come from the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline, which is still under construction by the Federal Government.

These plants are expected to play a crucial role in addressing Nigeria’s gas infrastructure gaps, ensuring that previously underserved regions gain access to a reliable energy supply.

By decentralising gas distribution, NNPCL aims to boost industrial productivity, support local businesses, and reduce reliance on more expensive or less sustainable energy sources.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader energy transition plan, which seeks to leverage Nigeria’s abundant gas resources as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. It also comes at a time when stakeholders are pushing for increased domestic gas utilisation to drive economic growth and reduce dependency on imported fuels.

With the launch of these mini-plants, NNPCL is positioning itself as a key driver of Nigeria’s energy security and industrial development, offering a potential blueprint for expanding gas accessibility nationwide.
