Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Aba Chapter, presented Ugochukwu Emmanuel Ifediora with an Award of Excellence in Engineering Innovation and Training on 18 April 2026. The presentation took place at Panyu Hotel, Aba, Abia State, during the Inauguration and Induction Ceremony of Ekeoma Chukwuma George as Chairman of the chapter.

Ugochukwu Emmanuel Ifediora is an engineer, entrepreneur and founder of Fedironics Intelligent Metering Company Limited. The company develops smart electricity metering systems and advanced metering infrastructure. His work spans over 15 years in Nigeria’s electricity value chain, covering power sector reform, smart metering deployment, digital energy systems and efficiency solutions.

The event brought together engineers, policymakers, academics and industry participants from different parts of Nigeria. The theme of the programme was “Rebuilding Together for Sustainable Growth: A Call to Unity and Shared Commitment”.

NIMechE is a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. It works through its chapters to support professional development, training, mentorship, innovation in engineering practice and contributions to national infrastructure development. The Aba Chapter focuses on member development and industrial engagement within the region.

Ifediora’s company developed the Fedironics iMeter, an IoT-based electricity meter designed for consumption monitoring, billing accuracy, reduction of energy loss and real-time data tracking in electricity distribution systems.

The award citation stated that he was recognised for engineering innovation. This includes development of local smart metering systems, contribution to digital transformation in the electricity sector and use of data-driven tools in energy management.

He was also recognised for training and capacity building. He has worked with young engineers and technicians through structured training programmes and collaborated with academic and industry partners on engineering development initiatives. His involvement with the Royal Academy of Engineering in the United Kingdom includes participation in the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation and the Higher Education Partnership for Sub-Saharan Africa programme.

He has received international recognition, including the Silver Medal from the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation and an award from the International Telecommunication Union. He has also benefitted from innovation-focused grants supporting engineering development.

During the event, Ifediora said: “Engineering must go beyond technical execution—it must drive economic growth, ensure energy security, and deliver sustainable solutions for society.”

He also called for stronger cooperation between government, industry and academic institutions to support industrial development and infrastructure growth in Nigeria. He highlighted the need for systems that strengthen local production and technical capacity.

The recognition at the Aba Chapter event reflects ongoing efforts within Nigeria’s engineering community to promote innovation, training and industrial development. The chapter continues to focus on professional growth and engagement with national development priorities.

The ceremony ended with the induction of new members and discussions on future plans for the chapter.
